How to Mix Dining Chairs: 6 Rules and 8 Combinations That Work

To mix dining chairs, keep one thing the same and change one thing: the same chair in different colours, or different chairs in one colour. Keep seat heights within a few centimetres, and use host chairs at the ends for an easy, planned look.

Key takeaways

  • Keep one thing the same (colour, style, material or shape) and change one thing.
  • Keep seat heights within about 2 to 3 cm of each other.
  • Match the scale: chairs of similar size and visual weight look intentional.
  • Repeat each style at least twice, or use pairs at the ends of the table.
  • Host chairs at the ends are the easiest way to start mixing.

How do you mix dining chairs?

Keep one thing the same and change one thing. Use the same chair in different colours, or different chairs in one colour, material or finish. Keep the seat heights within about 2 to 3 cm of each other so everyone sits level, and repeat each style at least twice. The easiest start is a set of matching side chairs with a pair of different host chairs at the ends.

6 rules for mixing dining chairs

  1. Keep one thing constant: colour, material, style or shape. It is what makes the mix look planned.
  2. Match the seat height: within about 2 to 3 cm, and all suited to your table. Our dining chair buying guide gives the standard sizes.
  3. Match the scale: chairs of similar width and visual weight sit well together; a tiny chair beside a large armchair looks odd.
  4. Repeat in pairs: two of each style, or pairs placed opposite each other, look intentional.
  5. Mind the spacing: armchairs and wide chairs take more table edge, about 60 cm per person or more.
  6. Tie it to the room: repeat a chair colour in the rug, art or cushions.

1. Host chairs at each end

Keep matching side chairs along both sides and put a pair of upholstered armchairs at the ends. Repeat their colour somewhere in the side chairs or the rug. Our taupe shell-back chair can work as a host chair at a larger, relaxed table: it is 90 x 90 x 80 cm, with a tufted shell back and gold legs, so check its seat height and the space at the end of your table before you buy.

2. The same chair in different colours

Choose one chair shape and buy it in two or three colours from one palette, such as sage, cream and taupe. Place matching colours opposite each other so the table stays balanced.

3. Different chairs in one colour

Collect different chair shapes and give them all the same colour, by paint or upholstery. The single colour holds the mix together, which is how many vintage tables are styled.

4. A bench on one side

Put a bench along one long side, ideally against a wall, and chairs opposite and at the ends. Choose a bench about the same height as the chair seats, and short enough to tuck under the table.

5. Two styles, alternating

On a long table, alternate two chair styles every other seat. Keep the colours close so the rhythm reads as a pattern, not a mismatch.

6. Upholstered chairs at a wood table

Soft chairs warm up a wood, stone or glass table. Repeat the table's tone in the chair legs, or the chair fabric in a rug under the table.

7. Modern chairs at a traditional table

Simple modern chairs make a classic, carved or inherited table feel current. Keep the chair colour close to the table or the walls.

8. Matching chairs and one statement pair

At a round or square table, use two matching chairs and a bold pair facing each other, such as velvet-look armchairs. The pair becomes the feature.

How does the rug tie mixed chairs together?

A patterned rug under the table can hold several chair colours together: pick chair colours that appear in the rug. A red rug with cream and gold works with cream, taupe or gold-toned chairs, and a sage rug suits light woods, cream and soft greens. The rug should reach 60 to 75 cm past the table on every side, so the chairs stay on it when pulled out. Our red 250 x 350 cm rug suits a table for six to eight, and our sage 400 x 500 cm rug suits a very large dining area or an open plan. See our rug colour guide.

Which mixing mistakes should you avoid?

  • Seat heights that differ by more than a few centimetres.
  • Every chair different, with nothing in common.
  • Chairs that are too wide for the table, so people bump elbows.
  • Arms that hit the table apron, so chairs cannot slide in.
  • Too many strong colours; two or three from one palette is plenty.

Frequently asked questions

Can you mix and match dining chairs?

Yes. Mixed dining chairs look relaxed and personal when they share something, such as the same colour, material or shape. Keep the seat heights similar so everyone sits at the same level, and repeat each style at least twice, so the table looks planned rather than random.

Should dining chairs match the table?

They do not need to match, but they should suit it. Contrast often looks better than a perfect match: upholstered chairs soften a wood or glass table, and light chairs lift a dark table. Repeat one colour or finish from the table in the chairs, such as a leg colour.

What are host chairs at a dining table?

Host chairs are the chairs at each end of the table, usually different from the side chairs. They are often upholstered armchairs or taller chairs, which makes the table look finished. Check that they fit the end of the table and that their seats are close in height to the side chairs.

How do I mix dining chairs with a bench?

Put the bench on one long side, ideally against a wall, and chairs on the other side and at the ends. Choose a bench about the same height as the chair seats and a little shorter than the table, so it tucks under. A cushion on the bench ties it to upholstered chairs.

How many different dining chair styles can I mix?

Two styles is the easiest and most reliable, for example side chairs and a pair of host chairs. Three can work if the chairs share one colour or material. More than that can look busy unless every chair is painted or upholstered in the same colour.
