Moving to Hamilton? How to Furnish Your New Home Room by Room
Furnish a new home in this order: beds and mattresses first, then the sofa, then storage, rugs and the TV wall. Measure every door and stairway before you buy, order the big pieces together, and book the delivery for after the move.
Key takeaways
- Buy in this order: beds and mattresses, the sofa, then storage, rugs and the TV wall.
- Measure first: every door, hallway, stairway and elevator on the way in.
- Order the big pieces together so there is one delivery to plan.
- Book delivery for after the move, once the boxes are out of the way.
- Budget for HST, which adds 13% to furniture and delivery in Ontario.
How should you furnish a new home?
Furnish in the order you live: beds and mattresses first, so everyone sleeps well from the first week, then the sofa, then storage, rugs and the TV wall. Before you buy anything, measure every door, hallway, stairway and elevator on the way in. Order the big pieces together so there is one delivery to plan, and book it for a few days after the move.
What should you buy first?
- Beds and mattresses: the one thing you need from night one.
- The sofa: the piece you will use most, and the one that sets the style of the living room.
- Storage: a storage bed or dresser to unpack clothes and bedding.
- Rugs: they warm hard floors, quieten echoing rooms and pull each room together.
- The TV wall: a TV stand, then lighting and decor.
Leave decor, art and extra chairs until you have lived in the rooms for a few weeks. You will know where the light falls and how you use each space.
What should you measure before you buy?
- Each room: length and width, plus where the windows, radiators, vents and outlets are.
- Every door on the way in: width and height, including the front door and the room door.
- Hallways and stairways: width, ceiling height and any tight turns or low beams.
- The elevator, in a condo: door width, depth and height.
- Your furniture: compare its depth and height with the openings, not just its width.
Hamilton homes range from older houses with narrow staircases to new condos with booked elevators, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Our small apartment furniture guide covers condo deliveries.
Room-by-room plan, with real prices
Each room below uses furniture from Home Centre Green, Hamilton, Ontario. Each row is priced as its own order, with 13% HST and delivery inside the City of Hamilton.
| Room | Pieces | Before HST | Delivery | Total with HST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Taupe Turkish sofa set ($4,000) + black coffee table ($100) + fireplace TV stand ($500) + red 250 x 350 cm rug ($200) | $4,800 | Free | $5,424 |
| Primary bedroom | White queen storage bed ($2,500) + navy 200 x 300 cm rug ($100); mattress not included | $2,600 | Free | $2,938 |
| Kids or guest room | Grey single storage bed ($350) + 90 x 200 cm mattress ($300) | $650 | $49 | $789.87 |
All three rooms in one order come to $8,050 before HST, with free delivery, or $9,096.50 with HST. That is $55.37 less than ordering the rooms separately, because the whole order qualifies for free delivery. Assembly is not included; it is available as an extra service. Pickup from our showroom is free. Our HST guide shows how the totals are worked out, and your cart shows the exact total before you pay.
The queen bed is listed without a mattress: we sell 90, 120 and 180 x 200 cm mattresses, and our team confirms the right mattress size for our queen frames. Our queen bed size guide explains why that matters.
The living room
Start with the sofa, then build around it. Face it towards the TV or fireplace, leave about 45 cm to the coffee table and 75 to 90 cm for walkways, and choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the seating. Our living room layout ideas show eight arrangements. For an extra seat, add our shell-back accent chair ($450). See the full living room collection.
The bedrooms
Every bed we sell has a built-in storage base, which helps when the closets are still full of boxes. For the primary bedroom, choose a queen bed and a rug that shows about 45 to 60 cm on each side. For children and teens, a 90 x 200 cm single or a 120 x 200 cm bed such as our pink wingback with a 120 x 200 cm mattress leaves room to grow. Before a child's first night, run through our kids bed safety checklist. See all bedroom furniture and mattresses.
How do you plan one delivery?
- Order the big pieces together, so there is one delivery to arrange.
- Book it for after the move, once boxes are stacked away from doors and walkways.
- Book the condo elevator and tell us about any building rules when you book.
- Clear a path from the door to each room, and protect floors if you want to.
- Know where each piece goes, so it is placed in the right room first time.

Frequently asked questions
What furniture should I buy first for a new home?
Start with what you use every day: beds and mattresses, so everyone sleeps well from the first week. Then the sofa, then storage for clothes and bedding, and finally rugs, the TV wall and decor. Spreading the rest over a few weeks lets you live in the rooms before you decide.
How much does it cost to furnish a home?
It depends on the size of the home and the pieces you choose. As an example from our own prices, a living room with a sofa set, coffee table, fireplace TV stand and rug comes to \$4,800 before HST. Add 13% HST, and leave room for bedding, lighting and decor.
Should furniture be delivered before or after moving in?
After, ideally a few days after the move, once the boxes are unpacked or stacked away from doors and walkways. That leaves clear routes for large pieces. If you need beds on the first night, book those first, and leave the sofa and rugs for a second, calmer delivery.
How do I make sure furniture fits through my doors?
Measure the width and height of every door, hallway and stairway on the way to the room, plus the elevator in a condo. Compare them with the depth and height of each piece, not just the width. Check tight turns on stairs, and ask the store about any piece that comes in parts.
