What should you bring?
A few measurements and photos turn a visit into a decision. Before you come, gather:
- Room measurements: the length and width of the room, and the wall where the sofa, bed or TV stand will go.
- The way in: the width of every door, hallway and stair the furniture has to pass, with doors fully open.
- Photos of the room from a few angles, including the floor, windows and existing furniture.
- Colours to match: a cushion, a curtain sample or a paint card.
- For a bed: your mattress size, or the frame size if you are keeping your mattress.
- For a TV stand: your TV's width and the width and depth of its feet.

How do you test a sofa properly?
- Sit for about 10 minutes in the position you normally watch TV in, not just for a few seconds.
- Check your knees and hips: if your knees end up higher than your hips, the seat is too low or too deep for you.
- Lean back and check that the back supports you without pushing you forward.
- Stand up and watch the cushion: it should spring back without leaving a dip.
- Feel the arms and edges: you should not feel the frame through the padding.

How do you test a mattress properly?
- Lie down for 10 to 15 minutes in the position you usually sleep in.
- Bring your partner if you share a bed, and test it together.
- Check your support: your hips and shoulders should feel supported, with your spine in a natural line.
- Turn over a few times; it should be easy to move.
- Sit on the edge, where you will sit to put on your shoes.
