HST on Furniture in Ontario: How the 13% Is Calculated, with Examples
Furniture in Ontario carries 13% HST, and so does delivery. Here is what the tax applies to, how it is worked out at our checkout, and real examples from a $100 rug to a $4,000 sofa set, so you know your total before you order.
Key takeaways
- Ontario HST is 13%: a 5% federal part and an 8% provincial part, charged as one tax.
- It applies to furniture, mattresses and rugs, and to delivery and assembly charges too.
- Our prices are shown before HST; the tax is added at checkout as its own line.
- A promo code lowers the tax, because HST is worked out after the discount.
- Quick check: multiply the pre-tax total by 1.13 to get what you will pay.
How much HST do you pay on furniture in Ontario?
In Ontario you pay 13% HST on furniture. The Harmonized Sales Tax combines the 5% federal GST and the 8% Ontario provincial part into one tax, and there is no lower rate for sofas, beds, mattresses, rugs or other home furniture. You can check the rate for every province on the Canada Revenue Agency GST/HST rates page.
The quickest way to find your total is to multiply the pre-tax price by 1.13. A $1,000 order comes to $1,130, and a $2,500 order to $2,825.
What does HST apply to?
HST applies to almost everything on a furniture order, not only the furniture itself:
- The furniture: sofa sets, chairs, tables, TV stands, beds, mattresses and rugs.
- Delivery: when a store charges to deliver taxable goods, the delivery charge is taxed at the same 13%.
- Assembly and installation: paid services such as putting a bed together are taxable as well.
If your delivery is free, there is nothing to tax on it, which is one more reason the free-delivery amount matters on larger orders.
How is HST calculated at our checkout?
Our checkout works out your total in four steps, in this order:
- Products: the prices of everything in your cart, before tax.
- Promo code: any discount comes off the products first.
- Delivery: Inside the City of Hamilton, delivery is free on orders of $1,000 or more, counted on your products after any promo code and before HST, and a flat $49 per order below that.
- HST: 13% of the products after the discount plus delivery.
Because the discount comes off before the tax, a promo code saves you the HST on the discount too: $200 off saves you $226 in total.
Worked examples with our real prices
Here is what HST adds to real orders from our Hamilton showroom, delivered inside the City of Hamilton. The last row uses an example promo code to show how a discount changes the tax.
| Order | Products | Delivery | Taxed amount | 13% HST | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Navy Turkish rug | $100 | $49 | $149 | $19.37 | $168.37 |
| Navy rug + accent chair | $550 | $49 | $599 | $77.87 | $676.87 |
| Brown queen storage bed | $3,000 | Free | $3,000 | $390 | $3,390 |
| Taupe Turkish sofa set | $4,000 | Free | $4,000 | $520 | $4,520 |
| Sofa set with a $200 promo code (example) | $4,000 − $200 code = $3,800 | Free | $3,800 | $494 | $4,294 |
For a $100 rug delivered to your home, the delivery fee of $49 is added first, so HST is 13% of $149, which is $19.37. If you pick the same rug up from our showroom, there is no delivery charge, and HST is $13.

How to budget for HST on furniture
With furniture, plan for the total, not the price tag. A few habits keep the number you plan for close to the number you pay:
- Plan with the after-tax total. Multiply every price by 1.13 when you compare pieces, so a $4,000 set goes on your list as $4,520.
- Add delivery and paid services before tax. Delivery and assembly are taxed too, so include them in the amount you multiply.
- Buy pieces together. One order means one delivery charge, and a larger order can reach free delivery, which also removes the tax on delivery.
- Pay the way that suits you. We take credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. We do not offer payment plans or financing, so plan for the full total at checkout.

Buying furniture for a business?
If you buy furniture for a business, office or rental that is registered for GST/HST, you still pay the 13% at checkout, but you may be able to claim it back as an input tax credit. The rules depend on your business, so check with your accountant or the Canada Revenue Agency. Your order shows HST as a separate line, which is what you need for your records.

Frequently asked questions
How much is HST on furniture in Ontario?
HST in Ontario is 13% of the price, and there is no lower rate for furniture, mattresses or rugs. For example, a bed priced at $3,000 before tax has $390 of HST, for a total of $3,390. To find the total, multiply the pre-tax price by 1.13.
Is HST charged on furniture delivery in Ontario?
Yes. When a store charges for delivering taxable goods such as furniture, the delivery charge is taxed at the same 13%. At Home Centre Green the delivery fee is added to your products before HST is worked out, and when delivery is free there is no tax on it.
Do your prices include HST?
No. Prices on our website and in our Hamilton showroom are in Canadian dollars before HST. The 13% is added at checkout and shown as its own line, so you see the tax and the total before you pay.
Is HST charged before or after a discount?
After. HST is worked out on the price you actually pay, so a promo code that takes $200 off an order also takes $26 off the tax. At our checkout the discount comes off first, then delivery is added, then 13% HST.
