Is Turkish Furniture Good Quality? An Honest Buyer's Guide
Turkish furniture can be very good quality, but it is not good just because it is Turkish: quality depends on the maker and the model. Judge each piece on its frame, foam, stitching, upholstery and hardware, and check them in person before you buy.
Key takeaways
- Quality depends on the maker, not the country. Türkiye has makers at every level, from budget to high end.
- Turkish furniture is known for its design: deep tufting, upholstered beds with storage, gold accents and matching sets.
- Check five things on any piece: frame and joints, seat foam, stitching and tufting, upholstery, and legs and hardware.
- Ask what it is made of. Many pieces mix solid wood, plywood and engineered board; the store should tell you which.
- Plan for European sizes. Turkish beds usually need mattresses and sheets in centimetre sizes.
- Buy where you can see, sit and ask, and where the warranty is written down.
Is Turkish furniture good quality?
Turkish furniture can be excellent, but "Turkish" is not a quality grade. Türkiye has a large, long-established furniture industry with makers at every level, from inexpensive mass production to carefully built pieces. Two sofas made in the same country can be very different inside.
So the honest answer is: judge the piece, not the label. A well-made Turkish sofa or bed has a rigid frame, seat foam that springs back, even tufting and straight, finished seams. A poorly made one looks good in a photo and starts to sag, wobble or fray much sooner. The rest of this guide shows how to tell the difference, on Turkish furniture or any other.
We sell Turkish furniture at Home Centre Green, Hamilton, Ontario, so we have an interest in the answer. That is why this guide sticks to what you can check yourself, and points out the drawbacks as well as the strengths.
What is Turkish furniture known for?
Turkish furniture is best known for its design: generous upholstery, detailed tufting and a luxurious, finished look. You will see the same features across our own collection:
- Deep button tufting: Chesterfield-style buttons on sofas, as on our Taupe Turkish Sofa Set, and on wingback headboards such as our cream single bed.
- Channel tufting: vertical padded channels on headboards and bases, as on our white queen bed and our fireplace TV stand.
- Gold accents: thin gold trim along frames and sculpted gold-finish legs.
- Upholstered beds with storage: our Turkish beds all have a built-in storage base under the mattress.
- Complete matching sets: beds with matching benches, nightstands, vanities and chests, as with our brown queen bed.
- Embroidered rugs: classic medallion designs with a low pile, like our navy Turkish rug.
These styles are a big part of why people look for Turkish furniture in Canada: they give a formal, hotel-like look that is hard to find in flat-pack ranges.
How can you tell good Turkish furniture from poor quality?
Check the parts you cannot see in a photo: the frame, the foam, the seams and the hardware. Five minutes of hands-on checking in a showroom tells you more than any description.
| Part | Good signs | Warning signs | How to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame and joints | Rigid, heavy for its size, silent | Wobble, creaks, twisting | Lift one front corner; the other front leg should rise too |
| Seat foam | Springs back quickly, even support | Dips, lumps, slow recovery | Sit for ten minutes, stand up and watch the cushion |
| Stitching and seams | Straight, tight, evenly spaced | Loose threads, puckering, wavy lines | Look along every seam, especially corners and cushion edges |
| Tufting and channels | Even depth and spacing, buttons secure | Uneven buttons, loose or missing ones | Look along the rows from one end; tug a button gently |
| Upholstery fabric | Tight weave, pattern lined up, no pulls | Thin fabric, snags, misaligned pattern | Ask for the cleaning code and the rub count |
| Legs and trim | Firmly fixed, finish even | Loose legs, chipped or peeling finish | Push the piece gently sideways; inspect the finish up close |
| Storage base | Opens smoothly and stays open, solid base board | Sticking, slamming, flexing base | Ask to open the storage on the display bed |
None of these checks need special knowledge, and a good store will be happy to let you do them. Our sofa set buying guide explains the frame and foam checks in more detail.
Is Turkish furniture made of solid wood?
Not always, and that is true of most furniture sold today. Many Turkish pieces combine solid wood, plywood and engineered boards such as MDF or particleboard, with metal in the legs, trim and mechanisms. Upholstered pieces in particular are mostly frame and foam under the fabric.
- Solid wood and good plywood are strong where screws and joints carry load, such as sofa frames and bed rails.
- MDF is stable and takes paint and lacquer well, which is why it is common for headboard panels, nightstands and vanities.
- Particleboard is the least expensive and the weakest at joints and screw holes, so it matters where it is used.
The right question is not "is it solid wood?" but "what is each part made of, and is that the right material for that part?" Ask the store for the exact model, and be wary of anyone who cannot tell you.
What should you check on a Turkish storage bed?
On a storage bed, check the base and the opening mechanism as carefully as the headboard, because those are the parts that work every day.
- Opening: the platform should lift smoothly, stay open on its own and close without slamming.
- Base board: the bottom of the storage box should feel solid, not thin or flexing.
- Mattress support: the platform should support the mattress evenly across its whole surface.
- Size: Turkish beds are usually made for European mattresses such as 90 x 200 cm, so the mattress must match. Our guide to European vs Canadian bed sizes explains why.
How does Turkish furniture compare with flat-pack furniture?
They are built for different needs. Flat-pack furniture is designed to ship in boxes and be assembled at home, so it is usually lighter, simpler and less expensive. Turkish showroom furniture is mostly upholstered and arrives in larger pieces, with more padding, detail and weight.
| What to compare | Flat-pack furniture | Turkish showroom furniture |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Design | Simple, modern, easy to match | Tufted, upholstered, decorative |
| Getting it home | Fits in a car; you carry the boxes | Large pieces; delivery is usually needed |
| Assembly | You build it yourself | Partly assembled; store assembly is often available |
| Moving house later | Can be taken apart, but joints may loosen | Heavier to move; measure doorways first |
| Seeing it first | Often bought online from photos | Can be seen and tested in a showroom |
Neither is better for everyone. If you move often or want a simple look on a tight budget, flat-pack can make sense. If you want an upholstered, formal room that stays put for years, it is worth checking a Turkish piece in person.
What are the pros and cons of Turkish furniture?
Turkish furniture's main strength is design and comfort; its main drawbacks are practical, such as European sizes and the size and weight of the pieces.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive, luxurious design with tufting and gold details | Bold styles do not suit every home; some find them too formal |
| Generous upholstery and comfortable, padded seats and headboards | Quality varies a lot between makers, so every piece needs checking |
| Complete matching sets for the living room and bedroom | Large, heavy pieces need careful measuring of rooms and doorways |
| Beds with built-in storage, useful in smaller homes | European bed sizes need matching mattresses and sheets |
| Long 200 cm beds suit tall sleepers | Some fabrics, such as bouclé and velvet, need gentle care |
Is Turkish furniture worth buying in Canada?
It is worth it if you like the style and the piece passes the quality checks above. Compare it with other options on construction and on the total cost of the order, not just the sticker price.
Here is what our Turkish pieces cost, in Canadian dollars before HST:
| Piece | Key detail | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Taupe Turkish Sofa Set | Sofa 220 x 90 x 80 cm, Chesterfield tufting | $4,000 |
| White Turkish Queen Bed with Storage | Arched channel-tufted headboard | $2,500 |
| Brown Turkish Queen Bed with Storage | Wide upholstered panel headboard | $3,000 |
| Grey Turkish Single Bed with Storage | 90 x 200 cm | $350 |
| Electric fireplace TV stand | 180 x 40 x 50 cm | $500 |
| Navy embroidered Turkish rug | 200 x 300 cm, 1 cm pile | $100 |
When you compare, add 13% HST in Ontario, delivery and any assembly. Ask the same questions of every store, and favour the one that answers them clearly.

How do you care for Turkish furniture so it lasts?
Good care matters as much as good construction. Upholstered Turkish pieces last longest when they are cleaned gently and often, and protected from strong sun and heat.
- Vacuum weekly with a soft brush attachment, paying attention to tufts and channels where dust collects.
- Blot spills straight away with a clean, damp cloth, and never rub, especially on velvet-look and bouclé fabrics.
- Fluff and rotate cushions regularly so the foam wears evenly.
- Wipe gold trim and legs with a soft, dry cloth; avoid abrasive or chemical cleaners.
- Keep pieces out of strong direct sunlight and away from heating vents, which fade and dry fabric.
- Rugs: vacuum once or twice a week without the beater bar and rotate every few months so they wear evenly.
Heat, strong sun and rubbing at spills are common causes of early wear on upholstery of any origin, so these simple habits make a real difference.
How we check quality at Home Centre Green
Most of our collection, including our sofa sets, storage beds, bedroom sets, TV stands, mattresses and rugs, is made in Türkiye and imported to our Hamilton showroom. Turkish or not, a piece only joins our collection after we check its frame, foam, stitching and fabric. We look for the same things we suggest you check:
- Firm joints with no wobble.
- Foam that springs back after you stand up.
- Even button tufting and channels.
- Straight, finished seams.
After you buy, our team checks every piece with you on delivery. Our furniture comes with a warranty against manufacturing defects in the frame, mechanisms and stitching; normal wear, accidental damage and misuse are not covered. If something is wrong, contact us with your order number and a few photos. Our FAQ has the details, and our care and aftercare service explains how to keep upholstery looking good.
What questions should you ask any furniture store?
Whether you buy Turkish furniture from us or anywhere else, these questions separate a clear answer from a sales pitch:
- What is the frame made of, and how are the joints fixed?
- What type of foam is in the seat, and how dense is it?
- What is the fabric, what is its cleaning code and its rub count?
- What exactly is included in the set price?
- What mattress size does this bed take, in centimetres?
- What does the warranty cover, for how long, and how do I claim?
- What do delivery and assembly cost, and who does them?
Write the answers down for each store you visit. A store that knows its products will answer most of these on the spot, and will find out the rest for you. If the answers are vague, or change from one visit to the next, treat that as a warning sign about the furniture as well as the store. Clear answers, in writing where possible, are the best protection you have when you buy any large piece of furniture.

Frequently asked questions
Is Turkish furniture good quality?
It can be. Türkiye has a large furniture industry with makers at every price level, so quality depends on the factory and the model rather than the country. Good pieces have a rigid frame, seat foam that springs back, even tufting and straight, finished seams. Check those in person before you buy.
Is Turkish furniture made of solid wood?
Not always. Like most modern furniture, Turkish pieces often combine solid wood, plywood and engineered boards such as MDF, with metal in legs and mechanisms. That is not automatically bad, but it should be stated clearly. Ask the store what the frame and panels of the exact model are made of.
How long does Turkish furniture last?
There is no single answer, because lifespan depends on the frame, the foam, the fabric and how the piece is used and cared for. A well-built sofa or bed with a rigid frame and resilient foam, cleaned regularly and kept out of strong sun, will last far longer than a weak one of any origin.
Why is Turkish furniture so popular?
Mostly for its design. Turkish makers are known for deep button and channel tufting, upholstered wingback headboards, gold trim and legs, beds with built-in storage and complete matching sets. Those styles give a luxurious look that is hard to find in flat-pack furniture.
Is all of your furniture made in Turkey?
Most of our collection, including our sofa sets, storage beds, bedroom sets, TV stands, mattresses and rugs, is made in Türkiye and imported to our Hamilton showroom. Each product page describes its own piece, and our team can confirm the origin of any item before you buy.
What does your warranty cover?
Our furniture comes with a warranty against manufacturing defects in the frame, mechanisms and stitching. Normal wear, accidental damage and misuse are not covered. If something is wrong, contact us with your order number and a few photos, and our team will take care of it.
