Sofa Set Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Set for Your Living Room

To choose a sofa set, measure your room and every doorway first, then compare the frame, seat foam and fabric, and pick the colour last. A set that fits your space and feels right after ten minutes of sitting will outlast one bought on looks alone.

Key takeaways

  • Measure before you shop. Note the room size, the walkways and every door, hallway and stair the sofa has to pass.
  • Leave about 45 cm between the sofa and the coffee table and 75–90 cm for main walkways.
  • Check the smallest dimension. A sofa usually goes through a door on its back or side, so compare its height or depth with the door opening.
  • Judge the frame and foam, not just the fabric. A solid frame and resilient seat foam decide how long a sofa keeps its shape.
  • Choose fabric for your household. Kids and pets need a tight, cleanable weave; a forgiving mid-tone like taupe hides daily marks.
  • Price the whole order. Add 13% HST in Ontario, plus delivery and any paid assembly, before you compare sofa sets.

What is a sofa set, and what does 3+2+1 mean?

A sofa set is a group of matching seats sold together, so the whole living room shares one frame style, fabric and colour. The common 3+2+1 set is a three-seat sofa, a two-seat sofa (often called a loveseat) and one armchair, which seats six people.

Sets are not always sold in that exact mix. Our Taupe Turkish Sofa Set, for example, is shown in our photos with two three-seat sofas and two matching shell-back chairs. Because the pieces in a set can vary, the first question to ask any store is simple: which pieces are included in the set price, and can you add or swap pieces? We ask our own customers to confirm this with our team before ordering.

A set suits you if you want a coordinated, formal look and seats that can be moved around the room. If you want one large corner seat for lounging, a sectional may suit you better; either way, the steps below apply.

How do you measure your living room for a sofa set?

Measure the room first, then subtract the space people need to walk, and only then choose the size of the set. A sofa that technically fits but blocks a doorway or a radiator will never feel right.

  1. Measure the floor wall to wall in both directions, and note windows, radiators, vents and outlets.
  2. Mark the walkways. Leave about 75–90 cm (30–36 in) for main paths through the room.
  3. Plan the coffee table gap. Leave about 45 cm (18 in) between the sofa and the coffee table, close enough to reach a cup and far enough to walk past.
  4. Tape it out. Use painter's tape on the floor to mark each sofa and chair at its real size, then live with it for a day.
  5. Face the focal point. Decide whether the seats face a TV, a fireplace or each other before you choose the layout.

Will the sofa fit through your door, hallway and stairs?

A sofa fits through a door when its smallest dimension is smaller than the door's clear opening. Most sofas go in standing on their back or on their side, so the length matters far less than the height and depth.

Our sofa measures 220 x 90 x 80 cm (length x depth x height). Its smallest dimension is the 80 cm height, so that is the number to compare with your doorway, while the 90 cm depth has to clear the height of the opening as it turns.

  1. Door width: open the door fully and measure the clear gap between the frame and the open door, not the door itself.
  2. Door height: measure from the floor to the top of the frame.
  3. Hallways: measure the width, and any corner where the sofa must turn.
  4. Stairs: measure the stair width, the lowest point of the ceiling above the stairs and any landing where the sofa must pivot.
  5. Condos and apartments: measure the elevator door, the inside of the elevator and book it with your building for delivery day.

What sizes are our living room pieces, in cm and inches?

Canadian shoppers usually think in inches while European and Turkish makers list sizes in centimetres, so here are our living room pieces in both. All sizes are length x depth x height.

Electric fireplace TV stand180 x 40 x 5070.9 x 15.7 x 19.7–

A common guideline is that the coffee table should be about two thirds the length of the sofa. Our 120 cm table suits sofas of roughly 180 to 230 cm, which includes our 220 cm Turkish sofa, and at 50 cm high it sits close to seat height so drinks and books are easy to reach.

What makes a good sofa frame?

A good frame is rigid, heavy for its size and joined so it does not flex or creak. The frame is hidden under the fabric, but it decides whether a sofa still feels solid in ten years.

  • Material: ask what the frame is made of. Solid hardwood and good plywood hold screws and joints well; thin particleboard is cheaper but weaker at the joints.
  • Joints: corners should be glued and screwed or reinforced with blocks, not only stapled.
  • Lift test: lift one front corner of the sofa a few centimetres. On a rigid frame the other front leg lifts too; if the frame twists, it is flexing.
  • Listen: sit down and shift your weight. Creaking or rattling is a warning sign.
  • Legs: check how they are fixed. Our taupe set stands on sculpted gold-finish metal legs, which wipe clean with a soft dry cloth.

If a store cannot tell you what a frame is made of, ask to see the underside or a cut-away sample. In our showroom, ask the team to show you the underside of the sofa on display.

What seat foam should a sofa have?

Look for seat cushions that spring back quickly when you stand up and still feel supportive after you have sat for a while. That comes from foam density and quality, which is a different thing from how soft or firm the seat feels.

  • Density is how much foam material is packed into the cushion. Higher-density foam generally keeps its shape for longer.
  • Firmness is how hard the cushion feels when you sit. A firm seat can still be low quality, and a soft one can be durable.
  • High-resilience (HR) foam recovers quickly after you get up, which is what keeps seats from developing dips.
  • Fibre or feather wraps around the foam add a softer, sink-in feel but need more plumping.

Ask the store for the foam type and density of the exact model, and do the simple test: sit on the sofa for ten minutes in the position you normally watch TV. If your knees end up higher than your hips, or you feel the frame through the seat, try another model.

Which sofa fabric is best for kids, pets and daily use?

For a busy home, the most practical sofa fabric is a tightly woven synthetic or a short, dense velvet-look pile, because both resist stains and snagging. Natural and loose-weave fabrics feel lovely but need more care.

Sofa fabrics compared

Cotton and cotton blendsSoft, breathableAbsorbs spills unless treatedFairCasual family rooms with washable covers
LeatherSmooth, warms to the bodyWipes clean; needs conditioningFair; can scratchEasy-clean homes, no sharp claws

Before you buy, look for the fabric's cleaning code on the label or ask for it. W means water-based cleaners are safe, S means solvent-based only, W/S means either, and X means vacuum only. Also ask for the abrasion rub count: the higher it is, the better the fabric resists daily wear.

Our taupe set mixes two textures: a velvet-look tufted outer with deep Chesterfield-style buttons, and a soft bouclé-style seat. To care for it, vacuum the tufts and seats weekly with a soft brush attachment and blot spills straight away with a clean damp cloth.

Which sofa colour is most practical?

A warm mid-tone such as taupe, mocha or greige is the most forgiving choice for everyday life, because it hides crumbs, dust and light marks far better than white or cream while still keeping the room bright.

  • Taupe and greige sit between grey and brown, so they work with cream walls, wood floors and both warm and cool accents.
  • Cream and white make a room feel large and light, but show every mark; they suit adult homes best.
  • Dark colours such as navy or charcoal hide stains but show pet hair and dust.
  • Bold colours such as rust work as a statement; keep the walls and carpet calm around them.

Choose the sofa colour before the paint, because paint is far easier to change. Our guide to building a warm, neutral living room around one statement sofa shows how to build the rest of the palette from it. If you want to see fabrics side by side in daylight, our fabric and colour matching service can help.

What should you check about delivery, assembly and warranty?

Before you pay, find out exactly who delivers, whether assembly is included and what the warranty covers, because these are the details that cause the most surprises.

  • Delivery area: our own team delivers inside the City of Hamilton only. If you live outside Hamilton, you can pick up your order from our showroom for free.
  • Delivery price: Delivery is free on orders of $1,000 or more, so a sofa set always ships free; smaller orders pay a flat $49 per order. See our delivery policy for the details.
  • Delivery time: pieces in stock are usually delivered in 1–3 business days, and we call you first to agree on a day and time.
  • Assembly: it is not included in the price or in delivery. It is a paid service on request, and we tell you the cost for your pieces when you order. Read more about our home delivery and assembly service.
  • Warranty: our furniture comes with a warranty against manufacturing defects in the frame, mechanisms and stitching. Normal wear, accidental damage and misuse are not covered. Our FAQ explains how to make a claim.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right sofa set?

Start with measurements: the room, the walkways and every doorway the sofa must pass. Then compare the frame, the seat foam and the fabric, and sit on the sofa for at least ten minutes. Choose the colour last, once you know the set fits your room and suits how your household uses it.

What size sofa set do I need for my living room?

Measure the room and subtract the walkways first. As a guide for our 220 cm sofas, two sofas facing each other with two chairs need a room of about 4 x 4.9 m (13 x 16 ft), while one sofa with two chairs opposite fits a room of about 3.7 x 4 m (12 x 13 ft).

How do I know if a sofa will fit through my door?

Measure the clear width of the door opening with the door fully open, and the height of the opening. Compare them with the sofa's smallest dimensions: most sofas go through on their back or side. Then check hallways, stair turns and ceiling heights on the way. If the numbers are close, ask the store before you order.

What is the best sofa fabric for kids and pets?

A tightly woven synthetic fabric such as polyester microfibre is usually the easiest to live with, because it resists stains and is hard for claws to snag. Velvet-look fabrics with a short, dense pile also wear well. Loose weaves and loop textures like bouclé look beautiful but can snag, so keep them away from pets.

How much does a Turkish sofa set cost at Home Centre Green?

Our Taupe Turkish Sofa Set is $4,000 CAD before HST, and the matching shell-back accent chair is $450. In Ontario, 13% HST is added at checkout. Ask our Hamilton showroom team to confirm exactly which pieces are included in the set price before you order.

Do you deliver and assemble sofa sets in Hamilton?

Yes. Our own team delivers inside the City of Hamilton and carries every piece into your home. Assembly is not included in the price; it is a paid service on request, and we tell you the cost for your pieces when you order. Pickup from our showroom on Lancing Dr is always free.
