Queen Bed Size in Canada: Exact Dimensions and How Much Room You Need

A queen bed in Canada takes a 60 x 80 inch mattress, about 152 x 203 cm. The frame is always a little bigger, so measure the frame, not the mattress, and leave about 60 cm (24 in) of space on both sides and at the foot.

Key takeaways

  • A Canadian queen mattress is 60 x 80 inches, about 152 x 203 cm.
  • The frame is bigger than the mattress. Headboards, side rails and storage bases add width and length, so always measure the frame.
  • Leave about 60 cm (24 in) on both sides and at the foot of the bed so you can walk around it and make it.
  • Minimum room for a queen: about 272 x 263 cm (8 ft 11 in x 8 ft 8 in) for the mattress and walkways alone, before the frame and nightstands.
  • European sizes are different. A 160 x 200 cm European mattress is 8 cm wider and 3 cm shorter than a Canadian queen.
  • Confirm the mattress size for the exact frame before you buy a mattress anywhere.

How big is a queen bed in Canada?

A standard Canadian queen mattress measures 60 x 80 inches, about 152 x 203 cm. Canada uses the same mattress sizes as the United States, so a queen bought in Hamilton is the same size as one bought in Toronto or Buffalo.

Those numbers describe the mattress only. The bed frame is always larger, and that difference matters more than most people expect when they plan a bedroom. Here is every common Canadian mattress size in inches and centimetres.

Canadian mattress sizes in inches and centimetres
SizeInches (W x L)Centimetres (W x L)Best for
Twin (single)39 x 7599 x 191Kids and small guest rooms
Twin XL39 x 8099 x 203Tall teens and dorm rooms
Double (full)54 x 75137 x 191One adult, or a couple in a small room
Queen60 x 80152 x 203Most couples and primary bedrooms
King76 x 80193 x 203Couples who want more space, or kids who join them
California king72 x 84183 x 213Tall sleepers in long rooms

Centimetres are rounded to the nearest whole number. A queen is the most practical size for most couples: it is wide enough for two adults and still fits into rooms where a king would leave no space to walk.

What is the difference between mattress size and frame size?

The mattress size is the size of the sleeping surface; the frame size is the space the whole bed takes on your floor, and it is always bigger. When you plan a room, the frame size is the number that counts.

  • Headboard: an upholstered or wingback headboard adds length at the head of the bed, and a wide panel headboard can also add width.
  • Side rails and base: an upholstered base wraps around the mattress, so it adds a few centimetres on each side and at the foot.
  • Footboard or bench: a footboard, or a matching bench at the foot of the bed, adds more length.
  • Storage base: a storage bed is built as a solid box, so it sits right down to the floor and needs space beside it to open or reach the storage.

So measure the frame's overall length, width and height, including the headboard, and use those numbers in your room plan. Our team confirms the exact frame size of each of our queen beds when you order, and you can measure the beds yourself in our showroom.

How much room do you need for a queen bed?

Plan for the frame plus about 60 cm (24 in) of clear space on both sides and at the foot of the bed. That is enough to walk around the bed, make it and open a nightstand drawer without squeezing past.

Use this simple formula:

  • Room width = frame width + 120 cm (60 cm each side) + the width of any nightstands.
  • Room length = frame length + 60 cm at the foot, plus the depth of a dresser or vanity if it faces the bed.

The table below uses the mattress sizes alone, so treat it as the absolute minimum and add the extra size of your frame and furniture.

Queen, double or king: which should you choose?

Choose a queen if two adults share the bed and the room can take the frame width plus 120 cm of walkways and your nightstands; choose a double for one sleeper or a small room, and a king only when the room has space to spare.

A useful way to compare is the width each person gets when two people share the bed:

Width per person when two people share the bed
Bed sizeTotal widthWidth per personGood choice when…
Double137 cm (54 in)About 69 cm (27 in)One adult, or a couple in a compact room
Queen152 cm (60 in)About 76 cm (30 in)Most couples and most primary bedrooms
King193 cm (76 in)About 97 cm (38 in)Restless sleepers, or children and pets who join you

Length matters too. The double is 13 cm (5 in) shorter than a queen, which can leave tall sleepers with their feet at the edge.

Can a queen bed fit in a small bedroom?

Yes, if the room is at least about 272 x 263 cm (8 ft 11 in x 8 ft 8 in) plus the extra size of the frame, but you will need to plan every centimetre. These choices make a queen work in a tight room:

  • Push one side closer to the wall. If only one person needs to get out on that side, you can reduce one walkway, but keep enough space to make the bed.
  • Use the storage base. A storage bed holds duvets, pillows and seasonal clothes, so you may not need a separate dresser at all.
  • Choose slim nightstands, or wall shelves, instead of wide bedside chests.
  • Pick a light colour. A cream or white upholstered bed looks smaller in a room than a dark one of the same size.
  • Skip the bench at the foot of the bed if it would cut the walkway below about 60 cm.
  • Check the door swing. In small rooms the bedroom door is often what limits the layout, not the walls.

If the numbers still do not work, a double or our 120 x 200 cm small double beds may suit the room better, and we are happy to compare the options with you using your measurements.

Do European and Turkish bed sizes match Canadian sizes?

No. European and Turkish beds are made in centimetres, usually 200 cm long, while Canadian sizes come from inches, so the two systems rarely line up exactly. That is why the mattress has to match the size the frame was built for.

Common European mattress sizes and their closest Canadian size
European size (cm)In inchesClosest Canadian sizeDifference
90 x 20035.4 x 78.7Twin, 99 x 191 cm9 cm narrower, 9 cm longer
120 x 20047.2 x 78.7No Canadian matchBetween a twin and a double
140 x 20055.1 x 78.7Double, 137 x 191 cm3 cm wider, 9 cm longer
160 x 20063.0 x 78.7Queen, 152 x 203 cm8 cm wider, 3 cm shorter
180 x 20070.9 x 78.7King, 193 x 203 cm13 cm narrower, 3 cm shorter

A few centimetres sounds small, but it decides whether a mattress drops into an upholstered frame, sits too loose, or leaves a gap at the foot. Two practical rules:

  • Buy the mattress for the frame, not for the name. "Queen" and "king" do not mean the same size in every country.
  • Buy them together when you can, so the store can match them for you.

Our own mattresses are made in European sizes and are all 30 cm (about 11.8 in) thick: the 90 x 200 cm single, the 120 x 200 cm small double and the 180 x 200 cm king. Each one is made for frames of the same size, such as our 90 cm and 120 cm Turkish storage beds. Note that our 180 x 200 cm king is narrower than a Canadian king, so it will not fill a Canadian king frame.

What size mattress fits our Turkish queen beds?

Our team confirms the exact mattress size for each of our queen frames when you visit or order, and recommends a mattress from our range that fits it properly. We ask every customer to check this with us before buying a mattress elsewhere.

The reason is the table above: a frame built for a European size can be a few centimetres off a Canadian queen mattress, and the difference is easiest to settle in person, with the bed and the mattress in front of you. Bring the size of any mattress you already own and we will tell you whether it will work.

If you are planning a full bedroom set, include every piece in your floor plan. A bench at the foot of the bed takes part of the 60 cm walkway, and a vanity or tall chest needs space in front of it to open drawers and doors. You can see all of our beds, mattresses and bedroom furniture online.

How do you measure your bedroom before you buy a bed?

Measure the room, mark where the bed and furniture will go, then check the way in. All you need is a tape measure, and it saves a lot of trouble on delivery day.

  1. Measure the floor wall to wall in both directions, and note the bedroom door, closet doors, windows, radiators and outlets.
  2. Choose the bed wall. Most beds look best centred on the wall opposite or beside the door, with the headboard against a solid wall.
  3. Mark the frame on the floor with painter's tape at its full size, including the headboard.
  4. Check the walkways: about 60 cm on both sides and at the foot, plus space for nightstands.
  5. Measure the way in: the front door, hallways, stairs and the bedroom door. The headboard is often the tallest single piece, so compare its height with your doorways.
  6. Check the ceiling if you choose a tall headboard, especially in basement or attic bedrooms.

Choosing furniture for the living room as well? Our sofa set buying guide uses the same measuring method for sofas and doorways.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a queen bed in Canada in cm?

A standard Canadian queen mattress is 60 x 80 inches, which is about 152 x 203 cm. That is the mattress only. The bed frame around it is larger, by an amount that depends on the headboard, the side rails and the base, so measure the frame itself before you plan the room.

What is the minimum bedroom size for a queen bed?

For the mattress plus about 60 cm (24 in) of walking space on both sides and at the foot, you need roughly 272 x 263 cm (8 ft 11 in x 8 ft 8 in). Add the extra size of the frame, and the width of any nightstands, to find the room size that will feel comfortable.

Is a queen bed bigger than a double?

Yes. A Canadian double, also called a full, is 54 x 75 inches (about 137 x 191 cm), so a queen is 6 inches (15 cm) wider and 5 inches (13 cm) longer. Shared between two people, a queen gives each sleeper about 76 cm (30 in) of width, compared with about 69 cm (27 in) on a double.

Will a European 160 x 200 cm mattress fit a Canadian queen frame?

Usually not well. A 160 x 200 cm mattress is about 8 cm wider and 3 cm shorter than a Canadian queen (152 x 203 cm), so it may not drop into a queen frame and can leave a gap at the end. Always match the mattress to the size the frame was made for.

What mattress fits your Turkish queen beds?

Our team confirms the exact mattress size for each of our queen frames when you visit or order, and recommends a mattress that fits it properly. Please check with us before buying a mattress elsewhere, because European and Canadian sizes do not always match.

Do you deliver and assemble beds in Hamilton?

Yes. Our own team delivers inside the City of Hamilton and carries every piece into the room. Assembly is not included in the price; it is a paid service on request, and we tell you the cost for your pieces when you order. Pickup from our showroom is always free.
