Will a Turkish Bed Fit a Canadian Mattress? Sizing Explained
Usually not exactly. Turkish beds use European mattress sizes such as 90 x 200 cm, while Canadian mattresses use inch sizes. A Canadian twin is about 9 cm wider and 9 cm shorter than a 90 x 200 cm single, so buy the mattress made for the frame.
Key takeaways
- Turkish beds use European sizes in centimetres, usually 200 cm long.
- A Canadian twin does not fit a 90 x 200 cm frame properly: it is about 9 cm too wide and 9 cm too short.
- 120 x 200 cm has no Canadian size, so it needs a mattress made in that size.
- Never force a mattress that is too big into an upholstered frame; it bulges and wears faster.
- Our 90 x 200 and 120 x 200 cm beds have matching mattresses, all 30 cm thick.
Will a Canadian mattress fit a Turkish bed?
Usually not exactly. Turkish beds are built around European mattress sizes measured in centimetres, while Canadian mattresses are made in inch sizes such as twin, double and queen. The two systems rarely line up, so the safe choice is a mattress made for the size the frame was built for.
This comes up often for people who buy a Turkish or European bed in Canada, or who bring a bed frame with them when they move here. The frame looks like a "single" or a "queen", but the mattress that fits it is a few centimetres different from the Canadian mattress of the same name.
Which Canadian mattresses fit which Turkish bed sizes?
Here is what happens when you put the closest Canadian mattress on each common Turkish bed size. Canadian sizes are rounded to the nearest centimetre.
| Turkish bed (mattress size) | Closest Canadian mattress | Difference | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 x 200 cm single | Twin, 99 x 191 cm | 9 cm wider, 9 cm shorter | Too wide for the frame, gap at the foot |
| 90 x 200 cm single | Twin XL, 99 x 203 cm | 9 cm wider, 3 cm longer | Right length, too wide for the frame |
| 120 x 200 cm small double | Double, 137 x 191 cm | 17 cm wider, 9 cm shorter | Does not fit |
| 140 x 200 cm double | Double, 137 x 191 cm | 3 cm narrower, 9 cm shorter | Loose, gap at the foot |
| 160 x 200 cm | Queen, 152 x 203 cm | 8 cm narrower, 3 cm longer | Loose at the sides, tight at the ends |
| 180 x 200 cm king | King, 193 x 203 cm | 13 cm wider, 3 cm longer | Does not fit |

Why do a few centimetres matter so much?
On an upholstered storage bed with raised sides, the mattress sits inside the frame rather than on top of it, which leaves very little room for error.
- Too wide: the mattress will not drop in between the side rails, or it bulges up at the edges and wears faster there.
- Too short: it leaves a gap at the foot or head where pillows, phones and blankets fall, and the mattress slides around.
- Too narrow: it moves from side to side and leaves gaps along the rails.
- Sheets: fitted sheets for the wrong size pop off the corners or bunch up.
What can you do about a small gap?
A gap of a centimetre or two between the mattress and the frame is normal and makes it easier to tuck in the sheets. A bigger gap is a sign that the mattress is the wrong size, and there is no good permanent fix other than the right mattress.
- Check first: measure the inside of the frame and the mattress in centimetres, so you know the real difference.
- Small gap at the foot: push the mattress firmly against the headboard so any gap is at the foot, where it is least noticeable.
- Mattress too big: do not force, fold or cut it. Return or exchange it if you can, and choose the size made for the frame.
- Best fix: buy the bed and the mattress together, so the store matches them for you.
Which mattress fits each of our beds?
Each of our single and 120 cm Turkish beds has a matching mattress made in exactly its size. All of our mattresses are 30 cm (about 11.8 in) thick. Prices are in Canadian dollars, before HST.

We also carry a 180 x 200 cm Turkish king mattress ($550) for 180 x 200 cm frames. Note that it is narrower than a Canadian king, so it is not a replacement for a Canadian king mattress. See all our mattresses, and our queen bed size guide for queen frames.

Already have a European or Turkish bed?
If you already own a European or Turkish frame and need a mattress, measure the inside of the frame in centimetres, from rail to rail and from headboard to foot, and bring the numbers to us. If it is a 90 x 200 cm or 120 x 200 cm frame, our mattresses in those sizes are made for it. For any other size, we will tell you honestly whether one of ours will work.
For sheets, choose fitted sheets labelled with the same size in centimetres and deep enough for your mattress; for our 30 cm mattresses, look for deep-pocket sheets.

Frequently asked questions
Will a Canadian twin mattress fit a Turkish single bed?
Not properly. A Turkish single bed is usually made for a 90 x 200 cm mattress, while a Canadian twin is about 99 x 191 cm. The twin is about 9 cm too wide to sit inside the frame and about 9 cm too short, so it would leave a gap at the foot. Choose a 90 x 200 cm mattress instead.
Can I use a twin XL mattress on a 90 x 200 cm bed?
A twin XL (about 99 x 203 cm) is the right length but about 9 cm wider than a 90 cm frame. In an upholstered bed with raised sides, it will not drop in between the rails. It is better to buy a mattress made for 90 x 200 cm.
Where can I buy a 120 x 200 cm mattress in Canada?
The 120 x 200 cm size is common in Europe and Türkiye but is not a standard Canadian size, so most Canadian mattress stores do not carry it. We stock a 120 x 200 cm Turkish mattress, 30 cm thick, made for our 120 cm storage beds and other frames of that size.
What can I do about a small gap between the mattress and the frame?
A gap of a centimetre or two is normal and lets you tuck in the sheets. A larger gap means the mattress is the wrong size and will slide. The real fix is a mattress made for the frame. Do not cut, fold or squeeze a mattress to make it fit.
Which mattress fits your Turkish queen beds?
Our team confirms the exact mattress size for each of our queen frames when you visit or order, and recommends a mattress that fits it. Please check with us before buying a queen mattress elsewhere for one of our beds.
