Kids Bedroom Ideas: 8 Looks Built Around One Upholstered Bed

Build a kids bedroom around one soft, upholstered bed with storage: it gives a comfortable headboard for story time, a place for toys and spare bedding, and a style that can grow with your child. Add a low-pile rug and simple, changeable colours.

Key takeaways

  • Start with the bed: it is the largest piece, so choose its colour and size first.
  • An upholstered headboard is soft to lean on and has no hard corners.
  • A storage base keeps spare bedding and out-of-season toys out of sight.
  • Keep the walls and big pieces calm, and add colour with bedding, cushions and art that are easy to change.
  • A low-pile rug makes a warm, soft floor for play.
  • Anchor tall furniture to the wall and keep blind cords out of reach.

Why build the room around the bed?

The bed is the largest piece in a child's room, so it sets the colour, the size and the style of everything else. An upholstered bed with a storage base does three jobs at once: a soft headboard for story time, hidden space for spare bedding and toys, and a look that can stay as your child grows. Below are eight ideas built on our real beds, with the rug and the extras for each. All prices are CAD before HST.

Ideas for ages 3 to 6

1. Soft and cosy in cream

A cream bed with a tall, button-tufted wingback headboard makes the room feel calm and gentle, and the padded wings are comfortable for sitting up at story time.

2. Gentle pink with room to grow

A dusty pink is soft rather than bright, so it suits a young child and still looks grown-up later. The 120 cm width leaves space for a parent to sit beside them at bedtime.

3. Calm grey with bright bedding

A grey bed is a calm base that hides small marks, so the colour can come from bedding, cushions and art that you swap as your child's favourites change. It is also our lowest-priced bed.

  • Bed: Grey Turkish Single Bed with Storage, 90 x 200 cm, $350
  • Mattress: Turkish single mattress, $300
  • Add: bright bedding in yellow, teal or red, and a low bookshelf for picture books

4. A tidy room with hidden toy storage

Any of our beds can anchor this idea: use the storage base for spare bedding, out-of-season clothes and toys that are not in daily use, and keep the everyday toys in low, open bins your child can reach. Fewer things on the floor makes the room easier to tidy at the end of the day. Our honest look at storage bed pros and cons explains how much a base can hold.

5. Bold royal blue

Royal blue is a strong, confident colour, and the gold frame on the headboard gives it a polished look. Keep the walls light so the bed is the feature.

  • Bed: Royal Blue Velvet Tufted Storage Bed, 120 x 200 cm, $950
  • Mattress: Turkish 120 x 200 cm mattress, $400
  • Add: white walls, white or grey bedding, and a desk lamp in brass or white

6. Sleepover-ready

A 120 x 200 cm bed is about 21 cm wider than a twin, so there is more room to sit, read and play on it. Keep a spare mattress or sleeping bags in the storage base for sleepovers, and leave clear floor beside the bed. Our twin vs single bed guide compares every size.

7. A reading nook in the bed

A wingback or tufted headboard is a ready-made reading chair. Add a wall-mounted reading light, a small shelf or nightstand for books, and two firm pillows to lean on, and the bed becomes the favourite place to read.

8. A shared room with two single beds

Two 90 x 200 cm beds fit side by side in many rooms, with about 60 to 90 cm between them for a shared nightstand and a path. Our grey and cream singles look good together, and a rug in the middle ties them into one room. A red 250 x 350 cm rug ($200) suits a larger shared room of at least about 3.1 x 4.1 m.

Simple safety tips for a kids bedroom

  • Anchor tall furniture, such as dressers and bookcases, to the wall so it cannot tip.
  • Keep blind and curtain cords out of reach, or choose cordless window coverings.
  • Keep the bed away from windows and heaters.
  • Teach children not to play inside the storage base or with it while it is open.
  • Use a rug pad on hard floors so the rug does not slip.
  • Check the mattress fits the frame with no gaps at the sides.

Choosing the rug and the bed size

For a single or 90 x 200 cm bed, our navy 200 x 300 cm rug laid crosswise under the lower part of the bed covers the bedside and much of the floor. Our rug size guide shows the sizes for every bed. For an older child, our teen bedroom makeover guide plans a room on three budgets.

Our own team delivers inside the City of Hamilton and carries the bed into the bedroom. Assembly is not included; our bedroom set installation service is a paid extra on request. Browse all our beds online.

Frequently asked questions

What size bed is best for a child's room?

A single bed suits most children. Our Turkish single beds take a 90 x 200 cm mattress, which leaves floor space for play in a small room. If the room allows, a 120 x 200 cm bed gives more room, space for a parent to sit at story time, and a bed that still fits as a teen.

How do I make a kids bedroom grow with my child?

Choose the large pieces, such as the bed and the rug, in calm colours and simple shapes, and add the theme with things that are cheap to change: bedding, cushions, wall art and lamps. A neutral upholstered bed with storage can stay from early school years to the teens.

What rug size works in a kids bedroom?

For a single or 90 x 200 cm bed, a 200 x 300 cm rug laid crosswise under the lower part of the bed covers the bedside and much of the floor. Leave 30 to 45 cm of bare floor to the walls, and use a rug pad on hard floors so it does not slip.

Are upholstered beds good for kids?

Yes, for most families. A padded headboard and sides have no hard corners, and they make a comfortable backrest for reading. Vacuum the fabric weekly, blot spills straight away, and choose a colour such as grey or a mid-tone that hides small marks if your child is very young.
