Teen Bedroom Makeover on a Budget: Bed, Rug and Storage Plans
A teen bedroom makeover starts with three things: a bed long enough to grow into, a rug that warms the floor and storage that clears the clutter. Here are three plans built from our real prices, from $750 to $1,550 CAD before HST.
Key takeaways
- Spend first on the bed and mattress: they are used every day for years.
- Choose length: a 200 cm bed gives about 9 cm more than a Canadian twin for a growing teen.
- A storage base replaces a dresser in a small room.
- A rug warms the floor and makes the room feel finished.
- Three plans from our prices: about $750, $1,200 and $1,550 CAD before HST.
Where should a teen bedroom makeover start?
Start with the pieces used every day: the bed and the mattress. Then add a rug to warm the floor and pull the room together, and storage to clear the clutter. Bedding, wall art and lighting come last, because they are the cheapest to change as tastes change. A plan in that order keeps the budget on what lasts.

Which bed suits a teenager?
Choose for length first. A Canadian twin is 191 cm long, which a tall teen can outgrow, while our beds take a 200 cm mattress. Then choose width by the room: a 90 x 200 cm single leaves more floor for a desk, and a 120 x 200 cm bed gives room to sit, study and host a friend. Our twin vs single bed guide compares every size.
- Grey single, $350: a calm, modern base that suits any colour scheme and hides marks.
- Pink 120 cm wingback, $700: soft and grown-up rather than bright, with a tall headboard to lean on.
- Royal blue 120 cm, $950: bold velvet-look fabric with a gold-framed headboard, a real feature piece.
Which rug finishes the room?
A rug makes the floor warmer on winter mornings and makes the room feel finished. For a 90 x 200 or 120 x 200 cm bed, our navy 200 x 300 cm rug laid crosswise under the lower part of the bed covers the bedside and much of the floor. In a larger room, the red 250 x 350 cm rug adds warmth and covers the desk area too. Our guide on how to choose a rug colour helps with the pairing.
How do you add storage without clutter?
- Under the bed: the storage base holds spare bedding, seasonal clothes and sports gear, and can replace a dresser in a small room.
- On the walls: shelves above the desk keep books and headphones off the floor.
- Behind the door: hooks for bags, jackets and hoodies.
- In the closet: boxes or bins for things used every day.

The desk area and lighting
We do not sell desks, so plan this part separately. Place the desk near the window for daylight, with the chair able to push back at least 60 to 75 cm. Use three kinds of light: a ceiling light, a desk lamp for homework, and a soft reading light by the bed. Keep cables tidy and plugs within reach of the desk.
How do you make it look grown-up?
- One colour scheme: a calm base, such as grey or white, and one or two accent colours.
- Plain bedding instead of themed prints; add texture with a throw and cushions.
- Framed prints or posters in matching frames instead of taped posters.
- A clear floor: the more that lives in the storage base, the bigger the room feels.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a teen bedroom makeover cost?
With our furniture, a bed, mattress and rug start at $750 CAD before HST with a grey 90 x 200 cm storage bed. A 120 x 200 cm bed with a mattress and rug comes to about $1,200 to $1,550. Add 13% HST, and leave room in the budget for bedding, a desk and lighting.
What size bed is best for a teenager?
Length matters most for a growing teen. A Canadian twin is 191 cm long, while our beds take a 200 cm mattress. If the room allows, a 120 x 200 cm bed adds width for sitting, studying and sleepovers, but still fits rooms where a double would feel crowded.
How do I make a teen room look grown-up?
Keep the large pieces calm and simple, such as an upholstered bed in grey, blue or dusty pink, and choose one or two accent colours. Replace childish themes with plain bedding, framed prints and good lighting, and clear the floor with hidden storage.
How do I add storage to a small teen bedroom?
Start under the bed. A storage base holds spare bedding, seasonal clothes and things that are not used every day, which can replace a dresser. Add wall shelves above the desk and hooks behind the door, and keep the floor clear.
