Sofa Set vs Sectional: Which One Really Fits Your Living Room?
A sofa set is easier to arrange, move and carry through narrow doors. A sectional fits more seats into one corner and suits lounging. Choose by the shape of your room, your doorways and how you use the space, not by seat count alone.
Key takeaways
- A sofa set is separate matching pieces: easy to rearrange, move and carry through doors and stairs.
- A sectional is one connected L or U shape: more seats in a corner and room to stretch out.
- Narrow entrances favour a set, because each piece goes through on its own.
- Open-plan rooms and rooms with many doors usually work better with a set; a closed corner suits a sectional.
- Measure the room and every doorway first, then choose the style.
What is the difference between a sofa set and a sectional?
A sofa set is a group of separate, matching pieces, such as a three-seat sofa, a two-seat sofa and an armchair (often called 3+2+1). A sectional is one large sofa made of connected sections that form an L or U shape, usually with a corner seat and sometimes a chaise.
Both can seat a family. The real difference is flexibility: a set lets you place each piece where it fits, while a sectional commits you to one shape, usually built around a corner.
How do they compare, point by point?
| Point | Sofa set | Sectional |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Pieces can face each other, a TV or a fireplace, or sit in an L | One fixed L or U shape |
| Best room shape | Open-plan rooms, rooms with several doors or windows | Rooms with one clear, closed corner |
| Seats in a corner | The corner stays empty or holds a side table | The corner becomes an extra seat |
| Lounging | Good for sitting upright and conversation | Good for stretching out, especially with a chaise |
| Doors and stairs | Each piece goes through on its own | Large sections; check every door and stair turn |
| Rearranging and moving house | Easy to reshuffle or split between rooms | Usually only one arrangement works |
| Walkways | Gaps between pieces keep paths open | Can block a path if the room is tight |
| Adding or replacing | Add a chair or replace one piece later | Sections are usually bought together |
How do they look in a 4 x 5 m living room?
Take a common living room of 4 x 5 m (about 13 x 16 ft), with the TV on one short wall. Here is how each option uses the space.
Layout 1: a sofa set facing the TV
- A 220 cm three-seat sofa on the long wall, or facing the TV wall, about 2 to 2.6 m from a 65 inch screen.
- A second sofa or two armchairs at right angles, leaving a gap of about 60 to 90 cm at the corner as a walkway.
- A 120 x 60 cm coffee table in the middle, about 45 cm from the sofa.
- A 180 cm TV stand on the short wall, with a rug that the front legs of every seat rest on.
The result: five to eight seats, open paths to every door, and pieces you can turn to face each other for guests.
Layout 2: a sectional in the corner
- An L-shaped sectional tucked into the corner opposite the TV, with one side along the long wall.
- The coffee table in front of the corner, and the TV stand on the opposite short wall.
The result: one large lounging area and a clear open floor on the other side of the room, but the corner and both walls are fixed, so a door, radiator or window on those walls can make it a poor fit.
Who should choose a sofa set, and who a sectional?
- You live in a condo or older home with narrow halls: a set, because each piece passes the door and stair turns on its own.
- You host family and guests often: a set, because pieces facing each other make conversation easier.
- You may move in the next few years: a set, because the pieces can be split across rooms in a new home.
- You watch films lying down: a sectional, especially with a chaise.
- You have one large, closed corner and a wide entrance: a sectional uses that corner well.

Frequently asked questions
Is a sofa set or a sectional better for a small living room?
It depends on the shape. A compact sectional can fill one corner neatly, but it fixes the layout. A sofa set lets you place a sofa and a chair where they fit best and keep walkways clear. In a small room with several doors or a window wall, a set is usually easier.
Does a sectional seat more people than a sofa set?
Not always. A sectional uses the corner seat, so it fits more people into one corner. A sofa set spreads the seats around the room, and with two sofas and two chairs it can seat as many or more, with space to walk between pieces. Count seats in your actual layout.
Is a sectional harder to move than a sofa set?
Usually, yes. Even sectionals that split into parts have large, heavy sections, and a one-piece L shape may not pass through a narrow door or stair turn. Each piece of a sofa set travels on its own, which makes delivery, moving house and rearranging easier.
Do you sell sectionals at Home Centre Green?
No. We sell sofa sets and matching pieces, such as our Taupe Turkish Sofa Set at $4,000 CAD before HST and a matching shell-back accent chair at $450. Visit our Hamilton showroom to sit on the set and plan the layout for your room.
