Electric Fireplace TV Stand Guide: TV Size, Power, Safety and Style

An electric fireplace TV stand gives you a media unit and a cosy flame in one piece, with no chimney or gas line. Here is how to pick the TV size, plan the power, use it safely and style it, using our 180 cm stand as the example.

Key takeaways

  • Pick a TV narrower than the stand: on our 180 cm stand, TVs up to about 75 inches fit.
  • Check the depth too: the TV base or feet must sit inside the 40 cm depth.
  • Plug it straight into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power bar.
  • The heater uses far more power than the flame, so running cost depends on how often you use the heat.
  • Never block the front of the fireplace and keep the heat outlet clear.

What is an electric fireplace TV stand?

An electric fireplace TV stand is a media unit with an electric fireplace insert built into the front. Your TV sits on top, and below it you get the glow of a flame effect, with no chimney, gas line or wood. Most models can also give off heat, which makes a living room feel warmer on a winter evening.

In this guide we use our Turkish Electric Fireplace TV Stand as the example: a cream, padded channel-style unit with rounded ends and gold-finish legs, measuring 180 x 40 x 50 cm (about 70.9 x 15.7 x 19.7 in), for $500 CAD before HST.

What size TV fits on the stand?

The simple rule is to choose a TV narrower than the stand, so it does not overhang the ends. TV sizes are measured on the diagonal, so the width is smaller than the number on the box. For a standard 16:9 TV, the width is about 87% of the diagonal:

TV width compared with a 180 cm stand (16:9 screens, approximate)
TV sizeScreen widthOn a 180 cm stand
55 inabout 122 cm (48 in)Fits, with a wide margin each side
65 inabout 144 cm (57 in)Fits, with about 18 cm each side
75 inabout 166 cm (65 in)Fits, with about 7 cm each side
85 inabout 188 cm (74 in)Too wide; it would overhang

The frame of your TV adds a little to these widths, so check the exact width in your TV's specifications. Then check the depth: the TV's base or feet must sit fully inside the 40 cm depth of the stand. If you mount your TV on the wall instead, the stand can be any width you like, as long as it looks balanced under the screen.

Is the TV at the right height?

For comfortable viewing, the centre of the screen should be close to your eye level when you sit, which for most adults on a sofa is roughly 1 metre from the floor. Our stand is 50 cm high, so with a TV on its own feet the centre of a 65 or 75 inch screen lands close to that height. A low stand like this is a good match for a large TV.

What power does an electric fireplace need?

Plug-in electric fireplaces are generally made for a standard 120 volt household outlet, so there is no venting, gas line or special wiring. A few points help the fireplace and your home's wiring work well together:

  • Plug the fireplace straight into a wall outlet, not into an extension cord or power bar.
  • When the heater is on high, it can draw most of a standard circuit, so avoid running another heater or a high-power appliance on the same circuit.
  • Plan the outlet position behind the stand before it goes against the wall, along with the TV and media cables.

We do not list the exact power rating of our model on the website, so please ask our showroom team for its heat and flame settings before you buy.

How much does it cost to run?

You can work out the running cost yourself with one formula:

The heater is what uses the power. The flame effect on its own uses much less, so evenings with just the flame cost far less than evenings with the heat on. Use the heat to take the chill off the room you are sitting in, and turn it off when you leave the room.

How do you use it safely?

  • Read the manual first and follow its clearances and instructions.
  • Keep the front clear. Do not block the heat outlet with furniture, cushions, toys or curtains.
  • Do not cover the stand with a cloth or throw while the fireplace is on.
  • Sit the TV fully on the top, with nothing hanging over the fireplace front.
  • Turn it off when you go out or go to bed, and keep an eye on children and pets near the heater.

How do you style a fireplace TV stand?

A fireplace TV stand becomes the focal point of the room, so arrange the seating around it. Place the sofa facing the stand, with an accent chair at an angle, and keep the space in front of the fireplace open.

  • Repeat the finishes. The gold legs of our stand match the gold legs of our Taupe Turkish Sofa Set, which ties the room together.
  • Keep the top simple. The TV and one or two small objects are enough.
  • Anchor the room with a rug. Our rug size guide shows how large it should be for your seating.

Frequently asked questions

What size TV fits on a 180 cm fireplace TV stand?

Choose a TV narrower than the stand. A 75 inch TV is about 166 cm wide, so it fits on our 180 cm stand with space at both ends, while an 85 inch TV is about 188 cm wide and would overhang. Also check that the TV base fits the 40 cm depth.

Does an electric fireplace TV stand need a special outlet?

Plug-in electric fireplaces are generally made for a standard 120 volt household outlet and need no venting or gas line. Plug it straight into the wall, not an extension cord or power bar, and ask our team for the exact power rating of our model.

How much does an electric fireplace cost to run?

Multiply the power in kilowatts by the hours you use it and by the rate per kWh on your electricity bill. A heater on a 1,500 watt high setting uses 1.5 kWh an hour. The flame effect on its own uses much less, so flame-only evenings cost far less.

Is it safe to put a TV on an electric fireplace stand?

Yes, a fireplace TV stand is designed to hold a TV on top. Follow the manual, keep the heat outlet at the front clear, do not cover the stand with cloth, and make sure the TV and its base sit fully on the top surface.

Can I buy a fireplace TV stand in Hamilton?

Yes. Our Turkish Electric Fireplace TV Stand, 180 x 40 x 50 cm in cream with gold legs, is $500 CAD before HST at Home Centre Green, 110 Lancing Dr, Unit 2, Hamilton. Stock is limited, so call or visit to check availability.
